Stuart-StanleyThe Hampton Roads Men’s Chorus came into being in the Fall of 1996. Under the direction of the Chorus’ Founder, Stuart Stanley, the chorus was created to give voice to the GLBT community of the Greater Hampton Roads region. Over the years more than 100 men have been members of the chorus.

Although the HRMC sang at several events in 1996-97, the first formal concert was performed on Saturday, December 20, 1997. Since that first concert, the Chorus has regularly performed two concerts a year as well as several cabaret shows. The Chorus has appeared in joint performances with the Lehigh Valley Gay Men’s Chorus and the Richmond Men’s Chorus. In June 2004, the Chorus presented the world premier of “Thus was my Love”. Composed by Eric Helmuth, the setting of three Elizabethan sonnets was commissioned through the Valentine Fund.

The HRMC became a member of GALA Choruses International in 1997 and performed at GALA’s International Festival VII held in Montreal in July 2004.  The chorus also performed at GALA Choruses' Festival 2008 in July, 2008 in Miami, Florida.

As we continue building community, one voice at a time, we invite all interested men to audition.  E-mail the artistic director at IWant2Sing@steppingout.org to arrange your audition!
