Joseph "Kila" Chong
Joseph “Kila” Chong has been singing Baritone with the Hampton Roads Men's Chorus for several years. A native of Honolulu, HI, Kila and his partner of nearly 43 years, Buddy Rau of New Orleans, have called West Ghent home since Kila retired in 2001. Although singing is one of his passions, it was not until joining the HRMC that Kila actually performed in a public venue. Kila also sings at the UnitarianChurch of Norfolk (UCN), both in its Choir and as part of a duet/trio, where he received voice coaching from UCN's late Choir Director, Robert Brown.
Both Kila and Buddy currently volunteer at Virginia Stage and Little Theatre of Norfolk (where Kila also appeared in LTN's 2005 production of “M*A*S*H), as well as at UCN, where the HRMC once rehearsed and performed.
Kila's long working career includes serving aboard both an aircraft carrier and a submarine while in the Navy, working on the Apollo “Man-On-The-Moon” project, supervising and inspecting offshore oil rigs, operating cranes, becoming director of audits for international quality standards, serving as executive assistant for a charter cargo and passenger provider, and, here in Norfolk, assisting the national marketing director of the largest distributor of free publications in the US.
In addition to singing and acting, cooking, gardening, traveling (with Buddy, of course) and researching the "Ohana" family tree are some of Kila's other passions.
